1 review for Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2

  1. Carter Fritsch (verified owner)

Like its predecessor, the ZBT-2 does exactly what it’s supposed to without complication or frustration.

    TLDR: Buy.

TL: I purchased this to use as my Thread base radio, alongside the ZBT-1 as my Zigbee coordinator, both on my HA OS NUC. The device is instantly recognized by HA & walks you through the installation of the OTBR & OHF Matter Server Apps, finishing shortly thereafter.

As I don’t use Google Play Services, it did take some time to figure out how to commission the 4 Thread nodes (2 Bulbs, 2 Remotes; All IKEA) I started with manually. Luckily, the native Bluetooth-based commissioning feature in HA had just landed in 2026.7, and after enabling it was quickly able to get them added, with firmware updates & automations finished not long after that. I’ve yet to experience any disconnects or interference (Though I did set the thread channel to 26 to avoid WiFi Overlap), and I look forward to the Thread/Matter ecosystem being built out in the coming years with a safe, secure, *private* base station ready to take on a growing mesh.

As always, shipping was quick & clean. Worth it!

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the ZBT-1 (SkyConnect) and the ZBT-2?

The ZBT-2 is the second-generation Connect adapter from Nabu Casa. It features a more powerful Silicon Labs MG24 chip compared with the EFR32MG21 in the SkyConnect/ZBT-1, an external antenna for better range, and up to 4× faster performance. The ZBT-2 also supports Zigbee 3.0, Thread, and Matter via OpenThread Border Router—the same protocols as the ZBT-1, but with significantly improved hardware.

Does the ZBT-2 work with Zigbee2MQTT?

Yes. The ZBT-2 is compatible with Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation), and OpenThread Border Router. It can operate as a Zigbee coordinator in Zigbee2MQTT. Simply select it as your coordinator in the Zigbee2MQTT configuration.

Does the ZBT-2 support Thread and Matter?

Yes. The ZBT-2 supports Zigbee 3.0 and Matter over Thread through its OpenThread Border Router functionality. You can use it as a Zigbee coordinator or a Thread border router. It cannot run both protocols simultaneously, so you must select one network type at a time.

What is the range of the external antenna?

The included external antenna provides significantly better range than adapters with internal antennas. Zigbee is also a mesh protocol, so powered Zigbee devices on your network can act as repeaters and extend the network's range.

Which devices are compatible with the ZBT-2?

The ZBT-2 is compatible with thousands of Zigbee 3.0 devices, including products from Aqara, IKEA TRÅDFRI, Sonoff, Philips Hue, Tuya, ThirdReality, and many more. All Zigbee 3.0-certified devices are supported.

How do I set up the ZBT-2 with Home Assistant?

Plug the ZBT-2 into a USB port on your Home Assistant device. Then go to Settings > Devices & Services > Add Integration. Home Assistant should automatically detect the ZBT-2 and guide you through setup. If you are migrating from an existing Zigbee adapter, the setup wizard may also support network migration without requiring you to re-pair your devices.

What Home Assistant hardware is the ZBT-2 compatible with?

The ZBT-2 works with devices running Home Assistant, including Home Assistant Green, Home Assistant Yellow, Raspberry Pi 3, 4, and 5, Intel NUC systems, and other x86 or ARM systems running Home Assistant OS, Supervised, Container, or Core. It connects through a standard USB port.

Do I need the ZBT-2 if I already have a Zigbee hub like SmartThings or Hubitat?

If you are moving your Zigbee devices to Home Assistant, the ZBT-2 can replace your existing Zigbee hub. Home Assistant manages devices directly through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, giving you local control without relying on a separate cloud-connected bridge.
